DASH diet reduces risk of heart failure

The incidence of heart failure is increasing in the population. We know that diet affects the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes and hypertension. The two diets recommended by the medical community are the Mediterranean diet and the Americans recommended DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet. However, it is very difficult to design and perform studies examining the effect of diet type on diseases. Patients need to be followed for decades in order for the diet type to cause significant benefit or harm on the diseases. In healthy individuals followed for 22 years, the risk of developing heart failure was 15% less in those who followed the DASH diet. Just consuming a plate of DASH diet recommendations instead of one plate of meat or processed food a day reduced the risk of heart failure by 8-12%.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect our lives. We know that COVID-19 disease has serious effects on the cardiovascular system as well as the respiratory system. Vaccines are our most powerful weapon against COVID-19, and it is clear that those who have been vaccinated have milder infections, even if they are infected. The American Heart Association published a very important document for all of us on April 1, 2022.

Protecting our heart health is in our own hands. Unfortunately, interventions made after the disease develops provide limited benefits and do not completely terminate the disease.
